How to Install or Update Windows Device Drivers
- Not applicable.
- Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button. In the search box, type Update, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Update.
- In the left pane, click Check for updates. If there are any available updates, click the links to see more information about each update. Windows Update tells you if an update is important, recommended, or optional. Each type of update might include drivers.
- On the Select the updates you want to install page, look for updates for your hardware devices, select the check box for each driver that you want to install, and then click OK. There might not be any available driver updates.
- If Windows Update can't find a driver for your device, and the device didn't come with driver software, go to the Windows Compatibility Center website, which lists thousands of devices, and has direct links to driver downloads.
- Once you find the updated driver, follow the installation instructions on the website. Most drivers are self-installing—after you download them, you usually just double-click the file to begin the installation, and then the driver installs itself on your computer.
- Note you must be logged on as an administrator to install a device driver.
- All device manufacturers such as HP, Dell, Logitech, have on their website links to install the latest device drivers. It is always a good idea to download the driver from these sites, since there is a greater likelihood that you will get the latest device driver software from the manufacturer.
- Once you find the updated driver on the manufacturer’s website, follow the installation instructions on the website. Most drivers are self-installing—after you download them, you usually just double-click the file to begin the installation, and then the driver installs itself on your computer.
